Press release: Royal Academy of Art receives again an innovation allowance.
Out of 52 project proposals 12 proposals were selected and some will follow. The new research program AR-VIP of the AR-Lab will concern itself with research in the field of Augmented Reality, Visualization, Interaction and Perception in the interest of art, design and science. The research will be within the Raak-Pro programme.This will build upon two earlier projects concerning Augmented Reality and RFID in Raak-MKB and Raak-Publiek.
The objective of the research program is to conduct artistic, experimental and scientific research aimed at developing new content and interaction methods based on the technical possibilities of modern interactive visualization tools such as AR. This research will take place primarily at the AR-Lab, an experimental laboratory in the Royal Arts Academy in The Hague.
This project will structurally improve the practical and theoretical co-operation between arts and science in the field of AR, so that students, alumni, teaching and scientific staff may improve their understanding of the nature and the applications of AR within art, design and science. The AR-Lab leads the program management of the consortium, which is further composed of: Artscience, inter-faculty programme of the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Conservatory (together Royal Academy of Art, Design, Music and Dance HBKMD). TU-Delft Biorobotics Lab, where AR techniques are researched and developed at a high level. Media Technology at Leiden University for fundamental research into the consequences of the content of AR. The MKB partners are Cybermind, which supplies the AR display hardware and Fabrique, a leading multi-disciplinary company in the fields of Communication and Design.
The collaboration between the three institutions is not new. Leiden University works together structurally with HBKMD at the Academy for Creative and Performing Arts. TU-Delft has worked together with the HBKMD for three and a half years via the Raak-projects. The envisaged exchange and collaboration offers advantages for each institution involved.
The high level of creativity and inventiveness artists and art-students have to offer to experiment with these new techniques along with the complex material of virtuality and reality as a new medium for art and design can be of great value in further developing AR techniques and applications.
